We take server level backups for disaster recovery, but you should keep your own copy of anything you cannot afford to lose. Your own backup is the one you control.
To make one from cPanel:
- Log in to cPanel
- Open Backup under Files
- Click Download a Full Account Backup, or download the home directory and each database separately
Keep a copy somewhere other than the server - a laptop or cloud storage is fine.
Take a fresh backup before any significant change, such as updating a content management system, changing a theme or installing a plugin. That is the moment things most often break, and a recent backup turns a crisis into an inconvenience.
